St Andrew’s Cathedral School

Overview

To further develop student choice and academic excellence, as well as celebrating the strong tradition of theatrical performances at St Andrew's, the School offers elective Drama for all students from Years 9 to 12.

Drama as a curriculum subject has been judged to be the most productive in learning the key competencies that equip an individual for life after school. These include confident self-expression, willingness to explore ideas, working as a group member efficiently and creatively to solve problems and developing both empathy and imagination.

Drama also provides experiences in video production, theatrical light and sound, design and scriptwriting and a range of production and staging skills that can be applied to many post-school occupations in the theatre, television and film production, video, graphics and animation.

Students and classes benefit from the School's close proximity to major theatrical events. The School actively supports curriculum Drama and encourages students to meld staff expertise with their own enterprise skills in projects such as musicals, drama festivals, scriptural drama and performing skills.

Although the School has undertaken a vast range of smaller theatre productions over many years in 2003 St Andrew's will be staging West Side Story at the Footbridge Theatre, University of Sydney, in April. This major musical event will involve more that 120 students in acting, music, production and 'house' activities.
