Showcase Music Concert
The highlight of the School's performance calendar is the annual Showcase Concert held in the Sydney Town Hall. The standard and music quality of this performance continues to attract widespread audiences from throughout Sydney.
Solo performer in 2001 was Alexander (Sasha) Gavrilyuk, Year 9, a brilliant young pianist who won the 2001 Hamamatsu Piano competition held in Japan from an international field of 16 finalists. Since leaving St Andrew's at the end of Year 10 to puruse his music career Sasha has given numerous international recitals in North America and the Continent. His international performing career continues to blossom.
The 2002 guest soloist was former student Simon Tedeschi, winner of the 1999 ABC Young Performer of the Year Award. Simon has performed extensively in Australia and overseas. During 2001 he completed a very successful recital schedule in the USA, England and Australia with the late Larry Adler. These concerts were wildly acclaimed by critics and audiences alike.
Guest soloist in the 2003 Concert was the famed pianist Mr David Helfgott whose life was depicted in the popular film Shine. Coincidently, 'the hands' in the film of the young David Helfgott were those of Simon Tedeschi, a close friend of David. The 2003 Concert series was an outstanding success with David playing with many individuals and groups during his three days in the School in addition to performing in an afternoon Matinee concert as well as the evening Showcase programme.
