St Andrew’s Cathedral School

Introduction

Middle School (Years 7 to 9)

Twinned coeducational classrooms for students at St Andrew’s commenced in 2008 in response to a period of careful research and consultation. The academic programme provides an environment that is cognisant of the manifest gender difference through early adolescence whilst continuing to access the countless positive social-emotional benefits of coeducation.

The academic programme in the Middle years fulfils the requirements of the NSW Board of Studies, with completion of the mandatory Languages and Creative Arts components by the conclusion of Stage 4 (Year 8). At present, the School offers two electives in Stage 5 although consideration is being given to extending this to three in the future.

The School’s leadership programme commences in Year 9 with the appointment of Middle School Leaders and the introduction of the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme as well as other initiatives.

Senior College (Years 10 to 12)

The Bishop Barry Centre (BBC) Coeducational Senior College was first established in 1992 and has expanded considerably since that time. The design of the BBC provides for the learning needs of Senior Secondary School age students. The dual emphasis of academic focus in a community setting in the heart of the City is captured in the open nature of classrooms and passive recreational spaces. With a decade of coeducational experience, St Andrew’s Senior College is one of the most powerful components of the School’s identity.

In 2009, the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme will be offered at the School for the first time to students in Year 11.

Our performance in public examinations including NAPLAN tests, the School Certificate and the HSC suggests an atmosphere of highly accomplished learning and teaching. Students at St Andrew’s overwhelmingly progress towards a UAI and tertiary education at the conclusion of Year 12.
