Secondary Sports Overview
St Andrew's Cathedral School believes that young people who are physically fit and enthusiastically challenged perform better academically. St Andrew’s provides sports activities for the full range of abilities. All students are encouraged to participate in the School’s sporting activities because of the enjoyment and support gained through team participation and to improve their physical fitness.
The School is proud of its affiliation with Sydney University, in particular St Andrew’s College. St Andrew’s oval is the home venue for Rugby, Football, Cricket and Softball. SACS also uses other University facilities for Basketball, Tennis and Squash. Individual sports such as fencing are situated at venues close to the School, whilst our rowing programme is centered at North Shore Rowing Club.
Summer Sports
Summer sport at St Andrew’s is optional. Students compete in Swimming, Tennis, Athletics, Basketball, Softball, Waterpolo and our First and Second XI Cricket teams compete in the ISA (Independent Schools Association) competition. The School also offers Rowing, Rock Climbing and Golf as recreational activities.
Winter Sports
The Winter sports programme is compulsory for all students in Years 7 to 11.
The School concentrates on developing team spirit and fostering individual skills in Rugby Union, Football, Hockey, Netball, Fencing and Skiing.
Over the years, St Andrew’s has performed very well in the ISA competition and we find ourselves competing in Division 1 across most sports in Summer and Winter.
Additional Facilities / Programmes
The School also has a fully equipped weights room which is overseen by the Strength and Conditioning Coach, Mr Timothy Gardiner. The Weights Room is available to all students as well as staff before and after school as well as lunch times.
A variety of programmes have been set for a number of students competing across a range of sports.
Tours
The major sports at the School such as Rugby Union, Football, Cricket and Netball engage in tours each year. In the past, there have been tours to New Zealand, United Kingdom, North Queensland and the Gold Coast.
Over the years St Andrew's Cathedral School students have gained representative honours at state and national level while a number of highly talented sports men and women have represented Australia at World games, Olympic or Commonwealth Games competitions.
With so much sport being played and offered, each student can find a niche to excel, to represent the School with pride, or just participate and enjoy the rigour and physical fitness achieved through sports participation.
