St Andrew’s Cathedral School

Sports Brief

Basketball

Basketball at St Andrew’ has continued to be one of the fastest growing of the Summer sports programme. St Andrew’s competes in Division 1 of the ISA competition and enters 11 teams.

St Andrew’s had a tremendous year in 2005 with our First V and 14A teams both making it to the semi-finals in their first year of ISA Division 1.

A St Andrew’s Opens squad will look to tour for the first time to North Queensland in October 2006.

Cricket

St Andrew's has much to offer for cricketers of all skill levels. All of our training and practise takes place at the state-of-the-art Sydney Cricket Ground indoor facilities where our experienced coaches provide expert feedback. This combined with our new bowling machine and rooftop cricket nets provide an environment for our talented students to learn and reach their potential.

Middle School students compete in the local Trans Harbour Trophy competition on a Tuesday afternoon and our First and Second XIs compete on a Saturday in the very competitive ISA Cricket competition where our results over the past 4 years have been outstanding.

Swimming

The St Andrew’s swimming programme continues to grow and the success of our swimmers at the ISA level has been the contributing factor to its ongoing popularity.

The swimmers are put through an intense training programme in addition to their own squad training.

We have been privileged to have a number of our students make it to the NSWCIS competition and even a former Paralympian in Matthew Levy.

Waterpolo

Waterpolo at St Andrew’s is relatively new and has grown in popularity with our girls having success in 2005 in their first year of competition.

St Andrew’s offers Waterpolo to all students from Year 7 to12 and has entered a First and Second team in both the boys and girls’ Friday night competitions.

Rugby Union

Rugby at St Andrew’s has been strengthened since the promotion into the ISA Division 1 competition in 2005. It continues to be a popular sporting choice for the boys in Winter and has increased to 11 teams across the 13’s to Open’s.

The First XV and Development squads tour each year to New Zealand and the Gold Coast.

Football (Soccer)

Football is played in Winter and utilises the venues and resources of the Sydney University Soccer Club.

Football continues to grow in popularity as St Andrew’s begins to compete at all levels in the ISA competition. Students have further participated in the competitive Kanga Cup in Canberra.

Tennis

Tennis is played during the Winter sporting seasons. Tennis is enjoyed by students from Year 7 to Year 12, for some in a spirit of competition while others play purely as a diversion from the pressures of their studies.

The students train at the School's all weather courts at Sydney University, not far from St Andrew’s Oval. There are six courts at the tennis centre.

Taekwondo

On Saturday mornings St Andrew’s trains with SHORE at the Taekwondo Wyllie Academy, Willoughby.

During the Winter season St Andrew’s and SHORE have sparring sessions with St Ignatius’ College, Riverview.

In September St Andrew’s competes in the All Schools Taekwondo Tournament, approximately 70 schools enter this competition

Fencing

Canon MC Newth (the late former Headmaster) once describe fencing as “a highly skilled art. It is a sport where personal physical values count…where superior speed and strategy win, and where brain counts equally as well as muscle…stamina is essential and reflex must be instantaneous, for the attacking blade reaches its target but a split second after it is launched, and it is that moment that the defender must choose and execute the correct parry and follow it immediately with riposte or counter attack.”

The art of fencing is the oldest sport at St Andrew’s Cathedral School. As a matter of fact the School holds the prestigious honour of being the oldest school for fencing in the Commonwealth.

Today the sport of fencing is thriving at St Andrew’s whereby students can select a Winter sport of either internal Fencing or competitive Fencing which is all the year round.

The School competes in many competitions including the NSW Schools Championships for teams and individuals. Over the last few years the School has won a number of trophies.

Softball

Softball at St Andrew’s was introduced to coincide with the commencement of Senior College girls in 1999/2000. The popularity of Softball has resulted in a complete team every year and an increase in demand from students.

Since its commencement, Softball has finished in the Finals and each year the team grows in strength, where in the 2005/2006 season, the students won the Second Division Grand Final.

The School will be able to enter a second team in the near future.
