Growth and Opportunity

Outdoor Education at Kirrikee

At St Andrew’s Cathedral School we encourage personal growth amongst our students outside of classroom activity, through extensive co-curricular opportunities and a tailored Outdoor Education programme held at Kirrikee in the Southern Highlands. We believe that conveying positive and high expectations to students and having faith in their abilities is a pivotal factor in seeing their socio-academic development.

“Many primary aged children don’t leave the comfort and security of their homes, their suburbs and their city. Outdoor Education affords them the opportunity to discover the Australian bush, gives them confidence as individuals away from the security of family and is a rich bonding experience with their peers.” - Mr Ric Van Wachem, Director of Outdoor Education at St Andrew’s.

In Years 3 and 4, students stay at Kirrikee for two days and in Years 5 and 6 for three days, sleeping under the stars in canvas tents. A range of activities, run by our specialised Outdoor Education team work to build initiative: including abseiling, raft building, ropes courses and group hikes into Morton National Park.

The Arts

Music is an integral part of the Junior School, with opportunities for students to get involved in our Junior-specific Percussion group, Concert Band, Orchestra, String ensemble and Singing group, combined with Gawura. Drama activities, led by our St Andrew’s drama staff, are also integrated into the academic programme, enabling confidence building and a heightened awareness of the relationship between one’s self and others from an early age.

Sport and Fitness

Our fitness programme sees students experience a range of team activities with Sport and Co-curricular staff, on both the rooftop playground and the school gym. After school sport is played at a variety of the city’s parks, including Wentworth, Tumberlong and Queens. We offer substantial extracurricular activities such as Sport Training for students in ASISSA (an Interschool Sporting Competition including Netball, Soccer, Oz Tag, Cricket and T-Ball), as well as Interschool Debating and Chess competitions that are supported by coaching programmes.
