Programmes for Year Groups


All St Andrew’s students, up to Year 10, attend at least one Outdoor Education programme, usually sited at Kirrikee, the School’s Outdoor Education Centre in the NSW Southern Highlands.

Junior School Programmes (Years 3,4,5 and 6)

The Junior School programmes are centred around Kirrikee and include:

  • Hiking
  • Camping
  • Canoeing
  • Rock climbing/Abseiling
  • Navigation
  • Outdoor cooking 

Year 7 Programmes

  • 5 days, 4 nights in Morton National Park Bundanoon. Includes full day hike, with camping out at either end. Ross Lookout to Echo Point.
  • Early Summer camping, 2 nights at Kirrikee, 2 nights out, 1 in cave. Includes abseiling and group leadership.

Year 8 Programmes

  • 5 days, 4 nights Morton National Park, Lake Yurrunga. Includes 1.5 days hike Meryla Rd to Beehive Point, 1.5 day canoe Beehive – Bendeela.
  • Late Autumn, 2 nights Kirrikee, 2 nights camping out. Includes 1.5 days canoeing on Lake Yurrunga.

Year 9 Programmes (week long)

  • Kosciuszko National Park, McDonnell Ranges Central Australia, Murray River.
  • Backcountry Ski and Snowshoe programme including snow camping.
  • Canoeing: Murray River, Yarrawonga to Ulupna Island (Morgans Mill).
  • Hiking: Larapinta Trail, McDonald Ranges, Central Australia.

Year 10 Programmes (week long)

  • Hiking: Munyang to Dead Horse Gap via Mount Kosciuszko.
  • Hiking: Katoomba to Yerranderie.
  • Multi-Disciplined Expedition: Kirrikee and the Shoalhaven.
  • Sea Kayaking: Myall Lakes. 
  • Back Country Ski and Snowboard Touring.
  • Mountain Bike Expedition: Australian High Country.
  • Horseback Trail Ride.
  • Overland Track including Cradle Mountain Tasmania.
  • Community Service and Cultural Experience, Central Australia.
  • Mountain Biking: New Zealand.
  • Kosciuszko to the Coast (Bass Strait).

Year 10,11,12 Optional Programmes

  • Leadership programme: 5 day programme designed to train Year 11 as leaders for younger student outdoor programmes.
  • Certification programmes: Aimed to provide certification in outdoor pursuits in all the areas listed below.
  • Parent/child programmes and parent only programmes.
  • White-water kayaking: A five day programme designed to introduce students to rodeo and white-water kayaking.
  • Rock climbing: A 5 day trip to Arapiles learning all the techniques of lead climbing without the risks!
  • Alpine skiing, cross country skiing and snowboarding: 8 day trips to Perisher, Thredbo and Mount Hotham, Victoria. Aimed both at the recreational skier and those interested in racing in each of the disciplines.
  • Caving: Caving programmes to cave sites not previously visited in the normal school programme, including Wee Jasper, Wombeyan and Tolmie.
