St Andrew’s Cathedral School

St Andrew's House

The School has occupied the two upper levels (plus extensive rooftop recreation space) in St Andrew's House since 1976 following the redevelopment of the Cathedral precinct by the Anglican Church. The School has been located in the Cathedral precinct since 1917.

Enrolment growth in 2000 led the School to expand its educational facilities in St Andrew's House by converting the northern end of Level 6 into a Year 7 Learning Centre to incorporate classrooms, seminar rooms and a computer resource centre as well as an Independent Learning Centre that monitors students' academic progress.

Early in 2001 the School concluded a financial arrangement with the Anglican Church whereby the School purchased Levels 7 and 8, as well as the entire Level 6 within the eight storey St Andrew's House building. This purchase cemented the School's central city location and ensured its proximity to the Cathedral from where the School derives its Christian traditions and its choral and musical heritage. Level 6 contains an extensive School Library with seminar and reading areas along with audio visual facilities, a number of computer centres and staff and administrative areas.

Learning facilities

Comprehensive Junior School learning facilities are located on Level 7 with year classes and large open areas for group learning and student activities. Computers are widely used and readily available throughout the Junior School.

Extensive modifications to Level 7 were undertaken in 2001 to provide additional classrooms and a more open Year 8 students' assembly area. The Level contains the School's Mathematics centre with associated staffing facilities and a science laboratory. Middle School facilities on Level 8 include numerous classrooms, three science laboratories, design and technology centre, graphic arts centre, Level 8 contains a mixture of three Science laboratories, a new languages centre, design and technology facilities and the School Canteen. In addition in 2001 the School developed a new School of Music that integrates with the Fairfax Music Room but provides more extensive individual and orchestral practice rooms, music classrooms, a keyboard laboratory and other music staff and storge facilities. The School gymnasium extends through both Level 7 and 8 at the southern end of the building.
