Salisbury
The House
The house system in St Andrew's was inaugurated in 1953 with just three Houses. Salisbury was one of the original houses, the other two being Canterbury and York. Salisbury has been a winner of the Dean Pitt shield five times and Athletics Champions in 2000 and 2001.
The Cathedral
Salisbury is unique amongst medieval English cathedrals, being built within one century with no substantial later additions. This remarkable building is a testimony to the faith and practical skills of those who erected it. It is possibly the most beautiful and architecturally perfect cathedral in England being constructed in one architectural style, that of the Early English.
The Cathedral is much more than an historical monument. It is the Cathedral Church of the Salisbury Diocese and so the Mother Church of several hundred parishes in Wiltshire and Dorset. It is a centre of pilgrimage for hundreds of thousands of visitors every year and a sanctuary where God is worshipped. Above all it is a place of prayer.
The Cathedral exists for the glory of God and as a sign of His kingdom in the world. To that end, the Cathedral mission is:
- To be a focus for the life of Salisbury Diocese and the ministry of the Bishop and to treasure the best in the life and traditions of the Church of England.
- To be a dynamic centre for Christian worship, prayer, community and mission in partnership with other churches.
- To act and witness for God's justice, peace and love.
- To provide an appropriate Christian Ministry to all who come to it.
- On behalf of the Church and Nation to conserve, enhance and interpret the building, its environment and its ministry as a symbol of God's presence.
