City Athletes
It’s easy to forget that our students really are privileged in their educational experience, reaping the benefits of two wonderfully disparate worlds. As a city school, our curriculum is not confined to the classroom, but the seemingly innumerable spectrum of opportunities that exist within a bustling megalopolis. In Senior College particularly, the city is opened up to students through our City Links Programme, as they explore the educational benefits of the surrounding sights, smells and sounds with excursions to museums, galleries, business and legal centers as well as important cultural landmarks such as the Sydney Opera House. Yet the important co-curricular aspects that go hand in hand with education, such as sport, are certainly not lacking. Wherever they can, SACS students take the opportunity to build their skills and improve on their natural talents or explore completely new ones.
On Tuesday the 22nd September, 22 St Andrew’s students represented SACS and the Independent Schools Association (ISA) at the NSWCIS Athletics Carnival at Homebush Bay. These athletes qualified to compete after their outstanding results at the ISA carnival at the beginning of the month.
From these 22 students, 10 have now qualified to compete for the CIS at the All Schools State Carnival in November. These were Daniel Siepen (2nd 3000m), James Beaver (1st, 100 m), Sam Toohey (2nd 800 m), William Bromiley (2nd 400m, 2nd triple jump), Zak Sampson (3rd long jump, 4th 400m), Matthew Aldridge (2nd shot put, 4th long jump), Llewellyn Phillips (3rd discus), Taylor Cornell (3rd high jump), Jack Margin (2nd discus ) and Bridgette Tran (3rd High Jump). Gawura student Taylor Naylor-Taggart also qualified to represent ASISSA and SACS at the Primary School CIS athletics carnival last Tuesday the 15th of September, finishing 5th in her heat.
Mr. Darren Lawrenson, Head of Sport and Co-Curricular, believes the impressive results are a credit to the student’s hard trainings and determination on the athletic track and field. “This has been the most successful athletics season that SACS has ever had in the history of the school,” Mr. Lawrenson said.
We wish those competing at the All Schools State Carnival in November the best of luck.
