St Andrew’s Cathedral School

Leadership Programme

In line with the School's strong belief that the senior year by definition is the leadership year, the School awards all Year 12 students a Student Leader Badge. This means that every member of the senior year will have a role to assist in the running of the School. No senior will be left out - all are vitally important in helping our School function.

The Year 11 Retreat commences the students' leadership programme. Students divide into Houses and cover a number of leadership and team building activities overseen by Heads of House. This is followed by workshops during tutorials and then the selection process is implemented in Term 3. The strong theme of this programme is that of service and respect.

The House system at St Andrew's provides a special bond between the year groups. Central to this bond is the relationships that exist between older and younger students. It makes a difference to members of the Middle School when older boys and girls take the trouble to remember the names of people in their House groups. This is one of the special features of St Andrew's. There is no chasm between the year groups and the differing ages of the students. They are a community of friends and none should ever be left out.

This leadership role presents a development from previous models of leadership where some seniors had been rewarded and some had been omitted from sharing in the task of leading. Captains of Music/Performing Arts, Captains of Sport and 7 Prefects who are responsible for Years 7 to 10, Junior School and Community Service join the eight House Captains. This group is led by two School Captains, making team of students who have particular tasks within the leadership role of all Years 12 students. Each day there is a duty Prefect roster and Prefects monitor the Arcade and lift areas. There are special Prefect Assemblies that are held once a term. House Captains coordinate the Year 12 leaders within each house to help with carnivals, charities, House Meetings and tutorials.

Each week duty Houses are appointed to manage the School. The Student Leaders in each of the House groups are allocated various duties to help with the good order and conduct of the School.

The Student Leadership Team provides a strong base for the Year 12 Leaders and through them, the whole School community.
