Peer Support
Peer Support is a programme that the School offers to enhance student development within the School. It is a chance for the Year 11 students to be supportive and caring friends to a small group of students who are in their first year of school. At the same time it offers Peer Support to the Year 7’s in their transition from Junior to Senior School. The programme has four sessions in Term 1 and five sessions in Term 2. The students will develop skills through focusing on specific areas such as Senior School transition, relationships, bullying, decision making and self awareness. This will help to achieve a more positive school culture.
Year 10 students are all given Peer Support training then offered the opportunity to nominate themselves as Peer Support Leaders through their Houses. A selective process then occurs culminating in the chosen students being presented with their Peer Support badges in Assembly at the end of Term 4. Four students per House are selected and these students are on board to welcome the new Year 7 students on their first day in Middle School.
The Year 11 leaders take the Year 7 students through a number of different activities relating to specific areas. Each session is run through the administration period and lasts for 30 minutes. Term 1 sees the students interact amongst each other to gain new friends, learn about the Senior College, its rules, the people within, communication skills, a Year 7’s role within the school and how to handle different situations. Term 2 looks into developing skills in certain areas such as decision-making, self awareness and self esteem.
The programme gives both the Year 11’s and Year 7’s the opportunity to make new friends within in the school and develop new skills.
