Just in case the busyness of the final year of school wasn’t enough, Year 12 students Eliza Pascoe and Trystan Go are playing the lead characters in the school’s upcoming musical, Fiddler on the Roof.
Eliza, who plays Golde – the mother of a large family living in 1900s Imperial Russia – says she didn’t expect to get the role when she auditioned for it.
“I was so surprised and happy when I saw the cast list that I started crying,” she says. “It’s so exciting to be doing a show that everyone knows, even my parents and grandparents.”
Rehearsals for the musical have taken place twice a week since last year and have gradually increased as the opening night draws closer. It’s a big workload for everyone.
Trystan, who is also school captain and is starring in the hit SBS series The Family Law and Australian drama film Occupation, is similarly excited about the performances, despite the workload.
Trystan says, “one of the hardest things for me has been juggling acting as well as my school work, because Year 12 is the ‘big year’, where everything counts.
“I’ve been trying to focus on that but also have time to do what I love, which is performing.
“I get to school early every day for classes, leadership meetings and choir practice and I stay back for after school rehearsals,” he says. “It’s really fun, especially when you get to perform alongside your friends who you’ve been friends with since Year 7. That’s really rewarding.”
Fiddler on the Roof is being held from 4 April – 6 April at NIDA’s Parade Theatre on Anzac Parade, Kensington. Tickets are available now.
