Redressing historic failures

Reports of historical abuse have been made by students from both the 1950s and 1970s.

In the 1970s, three choir boys reported abuse by an assistant organist and lay clerk from the Cathedral, Alan Moffat. The report was made to the then headmaster, Canon Melville Cooper Newth.

These claims were not reported to police or the boys’ parents. Canon Newth directed Alan Moffat not to have any further contact with choir boys. He was allowed to remain in his current positions, the abuse continued. Moffat remained at St Andrew’s Cathedral until 1982.

Both the Cathedral and the School have apologised for failing to protect children in their care and are committed to working with survivors on listening and healing. Further, the School is committed to ensuring appropriate policies and procedures are in place to prevent any such failure from occurring again in the future.
