Our students, our story: an update on how we use student photography

Keeping students at the heart of our story

We are honoured to share our students’ stories. As online and digital spaces continue to evolve, we must also consider the privacy and safety implications of sharing personal information in those spaces.

With this in mind, we are refining how we share student images and information across our public platforms. This change reflects evolving guidance from the eSafety Commissioner and forms part of our ongoing commitment to student wellbeing, privacy and safety.

While some aspects of our photography may change, our commitment to celebrating student life remains the same.

What is changing?

On our social media channels, Instagram and Facebook, families may begin to notice more photographs that focus on the experience rather than the individual student. This may include wider photographs, images taken from behind or photographs that capture the atmosphere and energy of School life without making students readily identifiable.

This will be a gradual change and for a period you may continue to see traditional student photography on our platforms as we refine this approach.

As we transition to this new style of photography, the images we share will continue to reflect the richness of life at St Andrew’s, in a way that more carefully considers how individual students are represented online.

A private platform is underway

In addition, the School is currently implementing a new learning management system, SchoolBox, that will play an important role in sharing the life of the School. As a password protected platform, SchoolBox will allow the School to communicate directly with families while continuing to celebrate students through more traditional photography where appropriate. You’ll hear more about this early next year.

A small change that reflects a bigger commitment

At its heart, this is a small change that reflects a bigger commitment.

We want every student to be valued, known, respected and safe as we continue to celebrate and share the life of our School.

We believe this is an important part of modelling positive digital citizenship for our students. It also reflects our responsibility to take reasonable and proactive steps to protect their privacy and safety as the digital environment continues to change.

The stories themselves are not changing. We will continue to share the moments that define our community. What is changing is the way we share some of those moments publicly, ensuring we do so with care for the young people at the heart of them.
