Responsible Futuring series equips students for life beyond school

It means helping them understand the world they are stepping into and equipping them with the knowledge, perspective and confidence to navigate it. At St Andrew’s Cathedral School, the Responsible Futuring series is doing exactly that.

Held each term in 2026, the four-part series has brought together parents who are leading professionals, innovators and experts from a range of fields. Through these panel conversations, students have gained practical insights into emerging industries, career pathways and the skills needed to thrive in a rapidly changing world.

This year, the series has explored four key areas:

  1. Engineering and Technology
  2. Business, Finance and Law
  3. Medicine, Health and Psychology
  4. Communication and Creative Social Impact.

The series reflects the School’s commitment to Responsible Futuring, a pillar of the 2026-2035 Strategic Plan and its educational vision.

“Responsible Futuring is a key pillar in our School’s strategy. We want our students to leave St Andrew’s Cathedral School not only with academic knowledge, but with a practical understanding of the world around them.”

“Responsible Futuring is a key pillar in our School’s strategy. We want our students to leave St Andrew’s Cathedral School not only with academic knowledge, but with a practical understanding of the world around them. By connecting students with leaders and experts from a range of fields, these discussions help them develop the context, awareness and confidence needed to navigate an increasingly complex future and contribute positively to it,” said Dr Julie McGonigle, Head of School.

Each session has encouraged students to think beyond traditional career pathways. They have explored how emerging technologies are transforming industries, gained insight into the worlds of business and finance, examined developments in health and psychology, and considered the role communication can play in creating positive social impact.

The recent Business, Finance and Law session provided a powerful example of the series in action. Bringing together 12 professionals from a range of specialisations, from traditional career paths such as banking, litigation and in-house counsel roles to sustainability and entrepreneurship, the event offered insight into the breadth of opportunities available across these fields.

Panellists shared their own journeys as well as advice on subject selection, university pathways, internships, work experience and the skills required to succeed in an evolving professional landscape. The session also gave students the opportunity to connect directly with industry experts and ask questions about their own aspirations.

For many, the breadth of possibilities on display was eye-opening.

“Hearing about such a broad range of possibilities was fascinating and made me think differently about what I might be able to do in the future.”

“I didn’t realise how many different jobs and career paths could come from one area. Hearing about such a broad range of possibilities was fascinating and made me think differently about what I might be able to do in the future. There was so much more variety than I expected,” said Year 11 student and attendee.

The impact of the Responsible Futuring Series extends well beyond each event. Students leave with new ideas, fresh questions and a broader understanding of the world around them.

By broadening perspectives and connecting young people with experienced professionals, the Responsible Futuring series is helping ensure St Andrew’s Cathedral School graduates step confidently into the world equipped with the practical knowledge, context and understanding needed to make a meaningful contribution to the future of society.
