Developing physical fitness and social skills

The St Andrew’s sport program promotes sport activity for all students and all ability levels. Students are encouraged to participate because of the satisfaction and personal development gained through team participation. This improves physical fitness, and enables students to learn the skills to deal with success and failure as well as developing the ability to interact within various social environments.

Sporting excellence

In recent years, the school has focussed on developing its sporting programs, employing highly experienced professional coaches and building strong links to Sydney University. Many of our students represent the school in the Independent Sports Association (ISA) competition which can provide a pathway to compete at Combined Independent Schools (CIS) level and even gain selection to NSW All Schools and Australian teams.

At St Andrew’s we are committed to providing extensive opportunities for all students and offer more than 22 sporting and co-curricular activities in the secondary school, including:

  • Athletics
  • Basketball
  • Cricket (boys)
  • Cross county skiing
  • Dance
  • Fencing
  • Fit for Life (outdoor adventures – bushwalks, rock climbing, abseiling and kayaking)
  • Football (Soccer)
  • Hockey
  • Mountain biking
  • Netball (girls)
  • Rugby (boys)
  • Softball (girls)
  • Swimming
  • Tennis
  • Touch Football
  • Water Polo

The winter sports program in Terms 2 and 3 is compulsory for Year 7 to 11 students (and is normally conducted on a Saturday). During the summer season, participation in a co-curricular sport is optional.

Strength and Conditioning gym

St Andrew’s has a fully equipped Strength and Conditioning facility at the disposal of all Year 7 – 12 students seeking to improve their fitness or develop their strength and conditioning for a particular sport. Athletes are provided with an individual training program and are supervised by strength and conditioning staff and coaches.

Long Term Athlete Development Program

The LTADP is one component of our sporting program, where students who demonstrate ability within the sporting arena are offered the opportunity to work in a smaller, more focused group. Sport-specific programs are developed for each of them to assist with fitness, strength, diet, academic outcomes and skill development. The program now caters for over 100 students from Years 7-12. Participants are required to train under guidance at least twice a week, as well as participating in both a Winter and Summer Sport and, if possible, either Swimming or Athletics for the school.

Junior School sport

The Sport Program for students from Kindergarten to Year 6 focuses on skill development in a different sport each term. Students in Years 3 – 6 are invited to compete in the ASISSA inter-school sport competition. These sports include: AFL, Football (Soccer), European Handball, Cricket, Netball, Oz-tag and Tee-ball.

All students in Years 3 – 6 are expected to participate in the school Swimming, Cross Country running and Athletics carnivals as part of the school sports program. Selected students have the opportunity to represent St Andrew’s at ASISSA Carnivals, the NSW Combined Independent School carnivals and NSW All Schools.
