A strong start can shape a lifetime of learning.

At Gawura School, Kindergarten is more than the first year of school — it’s the beginning of a journey grounded in culture, confidence and opportunity for First Nations children.

With small class sizes, personalised learning, explicit literacy and numeracy instruction, and deep cultural inclusion woven throughout the curriculum, Gawura is helping close the education gap while nurturing each child’s identity and sense of belonging.

The results speak for themselves: Gawura students consistently achieve strong outcomes, demonstrating the power of high expectations delivered in a culturally supportive environment.

As Head of Gawura School, John Ralph says: “Gawura School has a simple, yet powerful formula; the delivery of an explicit data driven curriculum practice, high expectations — with attendance being paramount; all delivered in a culturally supportive and enriching environment.”

Look a little closer

Look a little closer.

From 18–24 May, we’re celebrating Volunteer Week at St Andrew’s Cathedral School and Gawura School.

Throughout the week, our community will recognise the 300+ volunteers who help shape School life every day through special assembly shout-outs, student thank you messages and foyer displays.

Volunteers support our students in their exams with scribing and reading, they run reading initiatives and helping at events, performances, excursions and community gatherings, and more. Their impact can be found across every corner of our School, often in ways you only notice when you look a little closer.

Determination on display!
Our Junior School and Gawura School students put their endurance, resilience and House spirit to the test at the annual Cross Country Carnival at Queens Park last week. From the starting line to the final stretch, students showed incredible determination, persistence and encouragement for one another throughout the day.

There was plenty of energy and excitement across all School Houses, with students giving their all on the course and cheering on their teammates every step of the way.

Congratulations to all students who participated, and best of luck to those selected to represent the School at the upcoming ASISSA Cross Country Carnival! 👏

What a powerful morn

What a powerful morning of professional learning, collaboration and conversation at the 2026 Research Conversations: Educational Research Conference hosted by St Andrew’s Cathedral School last Saturday.

A heartfelt thank you to our incredible volunteers, both in person and online, who gave their Saturday morning to support the event. From logistics and tech support to moderating sessions and welcoming presenters and participants, your generosity and teamwork made the conference possible.

We are also deeply grateful to all presenters who shared their research, ideas and classroom practice so openly and thoughtfully. Your willingness to contribute to research-informed conversations in education created such a rich and engaging program for educators across schools and systems.

A special thank you to keynote speaker Dr Naomi Pfitzner for an inspiring and thought-provoking presentation on embedding evidence-based Respectful Relationships Education in schools. Your insights challenged us to think deeply about how research can meaningfully translate into practice.

Most of all, thank you to everyone who joined us online and in person. It was encouraging to see so many educators committed to thoughtful, collaborative and hopeful work in schools.

We are incredibly pr

We are incredibly proud to celebrate the outstanding achievement of Year 6 student Ian Yan, who has qualified for the final round of the prestigious Leonid Kogan International Competition in Brussels this June.

Widely regarded as one of the most challenging international violin competitions for young musicians, selection for the finals is an extraordinary accomplishment. Ian’s dedication, talent and work ethic have earned him a place among the world’s top young violinists, a remarkable achievement for a student in Year 6.

Beyond his musical excellence, Ian is known for his humility, positivity and commitment in all areas of school life.

“I’m very honoured to become a finalist in the Leonid Kogan International Violin Competition. I would like to thank my school for the support and encouragement," Ian says.

We wish Ian all the very best as he prepares to represent himself, his family and our School in Brussels later this year.

Congratulations, Ian!

A chilly morning mad

A chilly morning made warmer by community, coffee and celebration at our P&F Mother’s Day Celebration in Sydney Square last Friday!

Mothers and special mother figures enjoyed barista-made coffee, delicious breakfast sliders and sweet moments together as we celebrated all that they do for our community. Students loved stopping by the photo station for a special keepsake with their mums, and there were plenty of smiles thanks to a surprise visit from Andy the Gargoyle!

Thank you to our wonderful P&F for hosting such a lovely morning and to everyone who joined us to celebrate the incredible mothers and mother figures in our community.
