At the heart of Juni

At the heart of Junior School life, new Deputy Head of Junior School Emma Newling brings a deep focus on care, consistency and student wellbeing at St Andrew’s Cathedral School.

Stepping into the role this term, Emma draws on a wide range of experience across teaching, chaplaincy and school life over the past decade. Her work now spans both pastoral care and educational administration, with a focus on supporting students’ academic, social and emotional growth while helping ensure the Junior School runs smoothly day to day.

Having previously served as Junior School and Gawura Chaplain, Emma is no stranger to the rhythms of school life – from community chapels to large-scale musical productions, and the quieter, meaningful moments in between.

Her approach centres on creating an environment where students feel safe, supported and ready to learn, with strong collaboration across staff teams.

Future Game Changers: Learning from Leaders

Last term, members of the St Andrew's Cathedral School Girls Sport Sub-Committee spent the day at Sydney Swans HQ, exploring what it takes to build inclusive, high-performing sporting environments and shape the future of girls' sport.

Students were inspired by Kate Mahony, Executive General Manager – AFLW, whose leadership and experience across elite sport sparked valuable conversations around culture, opportunity and the power of student voice. Through collaborative workshops and practical activities, our students began developing ideas to further strengthen girls' sport at St Andrew's Cathedral School.

The experience has empowered our student leaders with new ideas, fresh perspectives and a shared vision for creating an environment where every girl can participate, lead and thrive through sport.

A sincere thank you to Kate Mahony and the Sydney Swans for generously hosting such an inspiring and thought-provoking day. We look forward to continuing this partnership and putting these ideas into action.

NAIDOC Week is now u

NAIDOC Week is now underway across Australia, running from Sunday to Sunday this week, celebrating the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

This year’s theme, “Fifty Years of Deadly”, marks a powerful milestone – honouring generations of First Nations voices, strength and cultural pride, while looking ahead to the future.

At St Andrew’s Cathedral School, we came together in Term 2 for a NAIDOC Assembly led by Gawura School, where students reflected on NAIDOC’s history and celebrated the enduring strength of First Nations cultures. As national celebrations now take place during the holidays, we continue to carry those learnings with us.

We encourage our community to take time this week to learn, listen and engage with NAIDOC Week events and stories across the country.

Our AFL programme ca

Our AFL programme came together for Community Day last term, bringing both our Junior and Senior teams onto the same stage, supported strongly by players, families and staff along the sidelines.

Both teams competed with determination against a highly experienced Waverley side, continuing to develop their connection and confidence in only the programme’s second year within the School’s sporting pathway.

The Junior team applied strong pressure throughout, working hard to disrupt their opposition. Bryan W was solid in defence, while Ned R and Sam N led with consistent effort across the ground.

The Senior team responded with courage and intensity in every contest. Douglas W was relentless through the midfield, finishing with eight tackles, while Wendell F was rewarded with his first AFL goal, a standout moment in the match.

Beyond the football, the day highlighted the values of the AFL programme through involvement in the Big Freeze initiative in support of the fight against Motor Neurone Disease. Players wore commemorative socks during their matches before coaches, staff and players took part in an ice bucket challenge after the games. Through the generosity of the AFL community, more than $1,800 has been raised in donations and approximately $1,300 from sock sales.

Thank you to all players, families and staff who contributed to the day. We look forward to more AFL next term.

Paddles up!

Six Year 10 students recently embarked on an incredible sea kayaking expedition through Myall Lakes National Park, journeying from Neranie Campground all the way to Nelson Bay.

Blessed with stunning weather and spectacular coastal scenery, the group embraced the challenge of navigating the waterways while building resilience, teamwork and outdoor skills along the way.

From peaceful mornings on the water to unforgettable moments exploring one of New South Wales' most beautiful natural environments, the expedition was a rewarding adventure for all involved.

Congratulations to our students on a fantastic achievement!

Fifty Years of Deadl

Fifty Years of Deadly: Celebrating Culture, Truth and Legacy

Last week, Gawura School led our school community in a moving and powerful NAIDOC Assembly and Morning Tea in the Cathedral ahead of the national observance during the school holidays. Guided by this year's theme, 'Fifty Years of Deadly', we honoured five decades of celebrating First Nations cultures, histories, achievements and voices.

The K-6 assembly opened with a series of traditional dances taught by Aunty Rayma Johnson.

A highlight of the assembly was a student-led presentation exploring the history of NAIDOC, tracing its journey from the 1938 Day of Mourning through to the nationwide celebration we know today. Students reflected on the activists, Elders and community leaders whose courage and determination helped shape the movement, reminding us that the story of NAIDOC is one of resilience, advocacy and cultural pride.

We were honoured to welcome special guests, including Commissioner Sue-Anne Hunter, the newly appointed National Commissioner for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children and Young People, Gawura School co-founders Aunty Sharon Minniecon and Pastor Ray Minniecon, alongside families, community members and supporters who joined us in celebrating this important occasion.

The presentation of the Mudyi Awards recognised students who embody friendship, cultural understanding and meaningful engagement with First Nations perspectives. Named after the Wiradjuri word for "friend", these awards celebrate the connections and mutual respect that strengthen our school community.

The assembly concluded with powerful performances of Djirri Djirri, Speak the Truth and the Farewell Dance, leaving our community with a reminder that NAIDOC is not only a celebration of the past 50 years, but also a commitment to the generations still to come.

At St Andrew's Cathedral School, we are grateful for the leadership of Gawura School and for the opportunity to learn from and celebrate the enduring strength, culture and contributions of First Nations peoples. As we reflect on Fifty Years of Deadly, we look ahead with hope, continuing to listen, learn and walk together in respect.
