Fifty Years of Deadly: Celebrating Culture, Truth and Legacy
Last week, Gawura School led our school community in a moving and powerful NAIDOC Assembly and Morning Tea in the Cathedral ahead of the national observance during the school holidays. Guided by this year's theme, 'Fifty Years of Deadly', we honoured five decades of celebrating First Nations cultures, histories, achievements and voices.
The K-6 assembly opened with a series of traditional dances taught by Aunty Rayma Johnson.
A highlight of the assembly was a student-led presentation exploring the history of NAIDOC, tracing its journey from the 1938 Day of Mourning through to the nationwide celebration we know today. Students reflected on the activists, Elders and community leaders whose courage and determination helped shape the movement, reminding us that the story of NAIDOC is one of resilience, advocacy and cultural pride.
We were honoured to welcome special guests, including Commissioner Sue-Anne Hunter, the newly appointed National Commissioner for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children and Young People, Gawura School co-founders Aunty Sharon Minniecon and Pastor Ray Minniecon, alongside families, community members and supporters who joined us in celebrating this important occasion.
The presentation of the Mudyi Awards recognised students who embody friendship, cultural understanding and meaningful engagement with First Nations perspectives. Named after the Wiradjuri word for "friend", these awards celebrate the connections and mutual respect that strengthen our school community.
The assembly concluded with powerful performances of Djirri Djirri, Speak the Truth and the Farewell Dance, leaving our community with a reminder that NAIDOC is not only a celebration of the past 50 years, but also a commitment to the generations still to come.
At St Andrew's Cathedral School, we are grateful for the leadership of Gawura School and for the opportunity to learn from and celebrate the enduring strength, culture and contributions of First Nations peoples. As we reflect on Fifty Years of Deadly, we look ahead with hope, continuing to listen, learn and walk together in respect. ... See MoreSee Less

Last Friday night, Sydney Town Hall became the stage for one of the most anticipated events in the St Andrew's Cathedral School calendar: Showcase 2026: Unfolding.
More than a concert, Showcase is a celebration of who our students are becoming. Through music, drama and dance, students from Kindergarten to Year 12 shared a powerful artistic journey exploring our School Vision: knowing our worth, developing our gifts with purpose and making a responsible impact in the world.
The evening celebrated the depth and diversity of performing arts at St Andrew’s, with performances by pianists, singers, dancers, actors and musicians across all year groups. Together, they told a powerful story of growth, creativity and excellence nurtured throughout a student’s time at the School.
Highlights included the Unfolding Medley - featuring pianists spanning Year 2 to Year 12, Symphony Orchestra's stirring performance of ‘How to Train Your Dragon’, the Middle School Choir's ‘Into the Unknown’, William Wheeler's (Year 12, Music Captain) moving rendition of ‘Gethsemane’ and a powerful finale featuring Massed Choirs, the Showcase Dance Troupe and every Year 7 student performing ‘Just One Step’.
As Director of Performing Arts Mr Ben Milis reflected, every child who stepped onto the stage carried something far greater than musical skill alone. They were sharing gifts that have been patiently nurtured, shaped and encouraged by a community committed to helping young people flourish.
To our students, staff, conductors, accompanists, tutors, choreographers, technicians and families: thank you. Your countless hours of dedication made this extraordinary evening possible.
