On 31 August 1819, St Andrew’s Cathedral’s foundation stone was laid by Governor Lachlan Macquarie. In the later special opening service of St Andrew’s Cathedral, he ordered a choir be formed out of the early colony’s ex-convicts and their children.
Today, the St Andrew’s Cathedral Choir organizes world-wide tours, performs in front of royalty and plays a significant role in the cultural life of Sydney.
The Choir is celebrating its 200th anniversary with a celebration concert this Saturday at 5pm.
Says Choir Director Ross Cobb, “Some of the music played at the first Cathedral service will be performed at a celebration concert, which commemorates some of the momentous events over the years, especially the visits of royalty to St Andrew’s Cathedral!”
